British boxer Cyrus Pattinson has shared an inspiring story of resilience as he prepares to return to the ring this Friday, November 22, 2024, in Newcastle. After battling a severe vision-related health issue, Pattinson is set to face Andrei Antonov in what he calls his most meaningful fight yet.
A Life-Altering Diagnosis
Pattinson’s struggle began shortly after his victory over Jorick Luisetto in September 2023. During a training session in December, he noticed troubling misalignment in his vision.
“My vision was jumping from one eye to the other,” Pattinson revealed in a recent interview with Sky Sports.
Hospital tests confirmed he had suffered trauma behind the eye—a condition that sidelined him not only from boxing but from all physical activities.
“It was like being in a car without wheels,” Pattinson said, describing how the inability to train left him feeling lost. Boxing, which had been central to his life and identity, was suddenly out of reach.
The Mental Toll
Wearing an eye patch for months, Pattinson grappled with uncertainty about his future in boxing.
“I was thinking: ‘Is this going to heal?’ I didn’t know when I could take the patch off,” he admitted.
For Pattinson, training had always been a mental and emotional outlet. Its absence was profoundly challenging.
“It’s my calling. It’s something I’ve done all my life and a massive part of my identity,” he explained.
A Triumphant Recovery
After six months of treatment and recovery, Pattinson made a full recovery, regaining his license to box.
“I made a full recovery, got my license back. That was my worry as well,” Pattinson shared.
Now, Pattinson is focused on his comeback fight against Andrei Antonov, which will take place on a card also featuring Harlem Eubank’s welterweight debut against Nurali Erdogan.
The Hardest Fight Yet
While Pattinson has faced tough opponents in the ring, he considers his health battle to be the most grueling challenge of his life.
“There’s no anesthetic to numb the pain or slow your mind down. You deal with it every day,” Pattinson said.
Despite the hardships, Pattinson’s journey has strengthened his resolve.
“A true fighter is someone who overcomes setbacks and comes back stronger,” he affirmed.
Focused on the Present
For now, Pattinson isn’t concerned with title pursuits or long-term ambitions. Instead, he’s grateful for the chance to compete again and for the support he received during his recovery.
“This has been the hardest fight of my life,” he said.
Through his return, Pattinson hopes to not only revive his career but also inspire others with his resilience and determination.
